Some conversations work like paperwork: exchange details, check for common ground, settle a plan. Others are more like a walk. They aren't heading anywhere in particular, and that is precisely why they discover places.

On a walk, no one asks what the next stretch is for. You walk, you look around, you mention something that doesn't matter and, all of a sudden, something that does comes up.

The worth of small things

Talking about the weather, a song, the odd shape of a cloud. Small talk opens a side door: it lets us be with someone without the pressure of proving anything.

Perhaps that's why we remember certain afternoons fondly, afternoons when nothing happened. What happened, in fact, was the essential thing: we were there, in no hurry to arrive.
